A FEW FOREIGN COVERS

Magazine contracts usually pay a writer a small additional sum to cover stories reprinted in foreign, translated editions.  This means the writer neither receives copies of them nor even knows of their existence.  A friend at Dell sent me the Alfred Hitchcock issue containing one of my stories in German.  The Mystery Writers of America provided the German edition of Beastly Tales.  The Private Eye Writers of America supplied the Japanese version of Mean Streets.  Other stories have been translated in French, Italian and Spanish but I have not seen them.

This one from Germany I knew nothing about until I found it on LYCOS and HOTBOT.  It contains a story called "Tickets For the Game" originally published in Mike Shayne Mystery Magazine.  I was paid nothing for foreign rights and nothing for this republication.  How many more are out there somewhere?  I'll never know.

A COUPLE OF NON-MYSTERY MAGAZINE COVERS

The story in Louis L'amour Western Magazine was a non-fiction account of the Reno Brothers Gang of Seymour, Indiana, America's first train robbers.  Artist Ken Bucklew of Spencer, Indiana was the subject of the story in Outdoor Indiana. These are the only non-mystery covers I still have.
